Caramelized Onion and Apple Tart
1 lb bread or pizza dough - Trader Joe's refrigerated whole wheat pizza dough works well
Nonstick cooking spray
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 large red onion - thinly sliced
3 oz thinly sliced cooked ham
1 red cooking apple - cored, quartered and thinly sliced
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
Fresh thyme sprigs (optional)
Allow dough to rise per package directions. (Trader Joe's 20 min. at room temperature)
Preheat oven to 450 deg.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Add sliced onion. Cook covered, about 12 min. or until tender. Uncover, cook and stir over med-high heat for 3-5 min. more. Set aside.
Spray non stick on 13×9 baking sheet. Stretch dough out to evenly cover surface. Prick generously with a fork. Bake on the lowest rack about 8 min. or until puffed and lightly crisped.
Top crust with ham, then a layer of caramelized onions, apple slices and cheese. Bake about 10 min. more or until crust is crispy and cheese is melted. If desired garnish with fresh thyme.
Serves: 6 Total cook time: 35 min.
