Caramelized Onion and Apple Tart

  • 1 lb bread or pizza dough - Trader Joe's refrigerated whole wheat pizza dough works well
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large red onion - thinly sliced
  • 3 oz thinly sliced cooked ham
  • 1 red cooking apple - cored, quartered and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • Fresh thyme sprigs (optional)


  1. Allow dough to rise per package directions. (Trader Joe's 20 min. at room temperature)
  2. Preheat oven to 450 deg.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet. Add sliced onion. Cook covered, about 12 min. or until tender. Uncover, cook and stir over med-high heat for 3-5 min. more. Set aside.
  4. Spray non stick on 13×9 baking sheet. Stretch dough out to evenly cover surface. Prick generously with a fork. Bake on the lowest rack about 8 min. or until puffed and lightly crisped.
  5. Top crust with ham, then a layer of caramelized onions, apple slices and cheese. Bake about 10 min. more or until crust is crispy and cheese is melted. If desired garnish with fresh thyme.


Serves: 6        Total cook time: 35 min.
