Brown Bread

  • 1 qt buttermilk (2 Tbsp lemon juice + 4 cups milk)
  • 1 1/2 cup molasses - original
  • 2 cup raisins
  • 2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 cup rye flour
  • 2 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt


  1. In large mixing bowl blend buttermilk and molasses. Stir in raisins.
  2. In bowl stir together the flours, cornmeal, baking soda and salt.
  3. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.
  4. Grease 9 Similac cans and pour in mixture. Cover tightly with foil and place on rack in 1“ boiling water. Cover and simmer over low heat for 2 1/2 hr adding more boiling water if required.
  5. Remove bread from cans and cool on rack.


Serves: 4/can        Total cook time: 2 1/2 hr
